Loading the island…

Wildlife is wild. Sightings can never be guaranteed.

πŸ‹ Watch for whales from shore

You don't necessarily need a whale-watching boat to have a chance of seeing whales. From high coastal lookoffs, scan the water slowly for blows, splashes, dorsal fins and groups of seabirds feeding. Binoculars make a real difference. Nothing is ever promised.

Skyline Trail and Middle Head are the classic land-based scanning spots.

πŸ¦… Bald eagle watching

Bras d'Or Lake shorelines are the heart of it, and eagles are often spotted along the Highlands coast too. We do not publish nest coordinates and never direct visitors onto private property.

🐾 Remember β€” they're wild

  • Never approach wildlife.
  • Never feed wildlife.
  • Never leave the trail to follow an animal.
  • Give moose plenty of room.
  • Never approach a bear.
  • Never approach young animals.
  • Never reveal nests or dens.
  • Use binoculars or a zoom lens instead of getting closer.
  • If an animal changes its behaviour because of you, you are too close.
  • Follow current Parks Canada wildlife guidance inside Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
